Do You Need A Bra On Wedding Day?
In the past, we have shared advice about wearing a bra with your wedding dress and if a bra is even necessary to wear with your wedding dress. This is by far the most asked question we get from our brides and it’s understandable as you want to be comfortable and well supported on wedding day. The long and the short of it is that you most likely do not need to wear a bra with your wedding dress. Many wedding gowns are designed with built in bra cups to give coverage and support so that a bra is not necessary. You certainly don’t want to be worried about your bra straps showing in your wedding photos or having to constantly adjust your wedding dress to cover your bra.
If you are wearing a low back or backless wedding dress, how can you wear a bra without having the strap show across your back? Many brides might not be comfortable going bra-less on wedding day or just don’t feel their most confident without the lift and support that a bra gives them. Your bust size will of course play a role in how a wedding dress fits you, but how can you ensure you get the lift you are looking for with built-in bra cups?
In general, you won’t be wearing a bra with your wedding dress. Wedding dresses are designed to have enough support and structure that a bra is not necessary for most brides. We do have the occasional bride that will have their bra sewn into their wedding dress for lift and support, but these are typically brides with very large natural breasts who need the additional support and will have the alterations seamstress sew the front of the bra into their dress.
Low Back Dress Support
It’s important to note that if you are considering a low back wedding dress or have already fallen in love with the look of low back dresses, you are going to sacrifice some support. Many brides want to feel really secure in their wedding dress, having that snatched waist and pushed up look that comes from a corset style or tight bodice that you will find in many wedding dress styles. Bridal gowns are designed with a lot of support and structure but you lose some of that once you go backless or low back.
You obviously won’t want to have a bra strap going across your back, that would ruin the whole look of choosing a low back or backless wedding dress. But if you choose a low back wedding dress, you are going to lose that feeling of being secure and totally wrapped in your wedding dress. You won’t have that tighter feeling around your chest and bust because there will be nothing against your upper back providing that pressure.
When shopping for your wedding dress, keep in mind that the majority of your wedding photos are going to be taken from the front. Don’t choose your wedding dress based solely on what it looks like from behind. We often have brides who come in to Lovella saying they want a wedding dress with a really dramatic back. Sure, your guests will all get to see the back of your wedding dress as you walk down the aisle, but the photos that are going to last forever are going to be from the front showing off your dress and your face, so don’t pick your gown only based on the back design. Be sure to try on a variety of dresses so you can see what the support feels like from a higher back dress to a backless dress.
Once you begin trying on wedding dresses, you will better understand how much more support and hold they offer than your everyday clothing. Be sure to try on both low back and higher back versions of wedding dresses so you can both see and feel the difference in support. It’s one thing to visually see your waist not looking as tight or snatched from a backless wedding dress but it’s important to know what it will feel like too.
How To Get Lift
If you are looking for that added lift in your bust, that is going to be difficult to achieve with a low back wedding dress because part of that lift is having support across your back. So if the way your breasts look in a wedding dress is very important to you, you want to keep this in mind when you are dress shopping. Something that you could do to give a low back wedding dress more support is to have your alterations seamstress sew in a band or strap across the back of the dress, like a cute ribbon that ties into a bow that would match the gown, so that you have that support right along the back like you get from your bra band strap.
If you don’t want to have a visual interruption of your low back or backless wedding dress, then you might be able to use fashion bust tape to give your breasts some added lift without the need for a bra. Silicone breast cups can also be a great option for added lift and a seamless look.
