Detachable Straps
If your wedding dress already has straps or sleeves, then you likely don’t have to worry about if your wedding dress has enough support. The alterations process will ensure that your wedding dress fits your body perfectly. But if you have opted for a strapless style bridal dress, then we always recommend having a detachable strap option on hand for wedding day.
Just like your favorite pair of jeans stretch and expand after a few hours of wearing them, your wedding dress will do the same. Your wedding dress is going to move with your body and expand from your body heat. Your wedding dress is not going to just slip off your body, it’s still fitted to you during the alterations process, but you might experience the feeling of the bodice falling. No one wants to be the bride constantly pulling up their dress while on the dance floor and it can just be a bit uncomfortable if you feel like your dress is falling down. You want to be in the moment enjoying your wedding day, not worrying about a wardrobe malfunction.
Having a backup option of a removable wedding dress strap is a great way to have some peace of mind. Something you can add to your wedding dress during the reception so you can dance the night away, care free. Even if you don’t end up needing the strap, just having it on hand can give peace of mind.
Straps That Support
When you begin wedding dress shopping, you will see that many bridal designers create wedding dresses with customizable options. Many wedding dresses have detachable overskirts or detachable sleeves that allow brides to change up their look throughout the wedding day. Some wedding dresses may even come with removable straps but these are often the off the shoulder style straps and they are not going to offer any extra support.
An off the shoulder strap adds a great design element to a wedding dress and is often a flattering style of bridal dress for brides of all shapes and sizes. While an off the shoulder strap or sleeve looks beautiful on a wedding dress, it’s not going to offer any support while you are wearing the gown. When it comes to having a detachable strap that will offer support, we mean the style of strap that goes over your shoulder like a traditional bra strap. Having a strap added to your wedding dress in that style is going to offer support and take on some of the weight of your wedding dress.
Detachable Strap Options
When considering what type of strap to add to your wedding dress, there are endless options. No matter what style or level of embellishment your wedding dress has, you can find a detachable strap that will look flawless with your wedding dress. Even if there is not a pre-made option available that you like, your seamstress can work with you during the alterations process to craft the perfect detachable strap - perhaps even using the remnants of your wedding dress once it’s been hemmed.
Be sure to chat with your bridal consultant about what options are available to you. As we mentioned earlier, there may be matching straps from the designer of your dress available for purchase if they are not included with your wedding dress. If you have chosen an off the shoulders style wedding dress, it might be possible to have the seamstress shorten the straps so that they can be worn both as a traditional strap up over the shoulder and also off the shoulder, so you wouldn’t need to worry about a detachable option. This would mean the straps wouldn’t drape as low on the arm, but would allow for a seamless look when lifting up onto the shoulder for the added support.
Style Preferences
Adding a detachable strap to your wedding dress is a great way to customize your bridal style and express your personality a bit more. Something simple like a strap can actually transform what your wedding dress looks like so you can achieve that 2 in 1 bridal look without purchasing a second reception bridal dress.
The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to styling your wedding dress with removable straps. You can go for a super simple satin spaghetti strap or match the beading or lace of your wedding dress on your detachable straps. Even the thickness of the strap can be played with from a thin spaghetti strap to a thicker strap that might be a couple of inches wide. You can go super elaborate with a textural strap or just keep it simple with a plain satin. You could even opt for a halter style strap versus traditional over the shoulder straps. The sky is the limit!
One important thing to note is that many bridal dresses actually come with a simple satin strap. These are usually attached to the inside of your wedding dress and you’ll have to remove them before wearing your dress on wedding day. Be sure to check with your bridal consultant and seamstress to see if your bridal dress comes with these basic straps. If your dress doesn’t come with a simple satin strap, this is an easy option to add on to your dress.
At the end of the day, detachable wedding dress straps are a great way to customize your style and have a little bit of fun. Whether you are looking for something just for extra support and functionality or are shopping for the look of it to express your fashion sense, we highly recommend having a backup detachable strap option on wedding day.
