Important of Testing Your Bridal Hair Style(s)

How you choose to style your hair on wedding day will be totally up you. You don’t have to choose a certain hairstyle based on your wedding dress, your wedding theme, or even your wedding venue. Many brides tell us they’ve been told to have an updo on wedding day, but if that is not your style, don’t do it. Just like with your wedding dress choice, we always tell our brides to choose the hair style that fits them, not the other way around.

When considering how to style your hair on your wedding day, opt for a hair style that you are comfortable in and love how it looks. We highly encourage doing a trial run with your hair and make up artists so you can ensure you like the look before wedding day and you like how the hairstyle and makeup looks in photos. You don’t want to spend hours getting your hair and makeup done on wedding morning only to find out you hate what they have done and now you have to walk down the aisle with a look you don’t like or be late to your own wedding while things are fixed and changed.

While an updo hairstyle might be a bit more functional for a wedding day because you don’t have to worry as much about messing it up or getting super sweaty dancing the night away, there are no set rules to how a bride should wear their hair. Whatever style you choose, make sure you love how it looks in the mirror and in photos. Take photos during your trail run so you can be sure you like how it looks because at the end of the day, the wedding photos are going to be what lasts.

Also, if you're thinking about multiple hair styles on wedding day, be sure to have a trial for each style as well as a trial for how to change from the one style to the next. The last thing you want it to change into a bridal hair style that you haven't tried out to see if you even like and you haven't factored in enough time to make it happen on your wedding day - we'll talk a little more about timing below. It's worth mentioning that timing matters during your pre-wedding hair trial as well as on wedding day.

How To Go From Hair Down To Up On Wedding Day

At Lovella, we have been hearing from many brides recently shopping with us that they plan on doing a hair change on wedding day. We are all about changing up your style and look on wedding day, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind. After all, your wedding day is only one day and it goes by very quickly! You have spent many months planning your wedding day and you want to be sure you can enjoy the day and not be stressed about your bridal fashion.

If you are considering a hairstyle change on wedding day, we would encourage you to go from down to up. Many brides have recently told us they want to wear their hair up for their wedding ceremony and then take it down for the reception. This transition is going to be more difficult than going from wearing your hair down to an updo. If you start with your hair up, it’s going to be manipulated already with hairspray and bobby pins and it’s going to be more work to bring all of that down than to take your hair and put it up.

In addition to being an easier change over going from hair down to hair up, it’s also more functional to go this way. Your wedding reception and the end of the night is when you are going to be dancing and sweaty and it makes sense to have your hair up then - whether you do a styled updo or just a high pony or bun style. The wedding ceremony is a shorter portion of the day, so if you wear your hair down, you have less time to worry about “ruining” the look.

Timing Your Change Bridal Hair Change On Wedding Day

When planning for a wedding day style change, you want to plan that time into your wedding day schedule. Whether you plan on changing into a second dress or just doing a wedding hairstyle switch, put time for this into your day of timeline. You can plan to do your switch during cocktail hour or during the reception. But whenever you plan to do the change, keep in mind that you will be missing part of the celebration.

A dress change can be done in a matter of minutes. This is especially true if you are just taking off an overskirt or detachable sleeves. Even if you are changing from a long wedding dress into a mini dress, this can be do fairly quickly. Completely changing your hairstyle however can take much longer to accomplish.

Depending on how intricate of a hairstyle you want for your second look, and how intricate your first hairstyle is, the change over can take a decent amount of time. The wedding day goes by so quickly that you really don’t want to waste a lot of time doing a hairstyle change. A full new hairstyle could take 30 minutes to an hour and that is time you could be with your new spouse, actually eating the meal you paid for, or chatting with your guests. You don't want to take a lot of time out of your wedding day to fuss with your hair. Go spend that time making memories with your loved ones.

Our Final Thoughts About Multiple Bridal Hair Styles on Wedding Day

If your budget allows, it can be good to have a hair stylist on hand through your wedding day or at least through the formal portrait photos to ensure everything is in place and looking its best. Wedding day is going to be busy and you won’t be able to check how you look before each photo is taken, but if you have a point person to be sure your hair is in place and your lipstick is fresh, your wedding photos will shine.

All in all, we wouldn’t recommend a hairstyle change on wedding day because we want you out celebrating with all of your people. If you do decide on a hair change, make it a quick one so you can get back out there with your new spouse and dance the night away with your friends and family.

Be present, in the moment and savor every single second of your big day!
