Just Be Patient

Our best advice to brides hoping to sell their wedding dresses is to be patient with the process. It is a 50-50 shot of it being super successful or taking years to sell your wedding dress.

It may be surprising to learn, but yes, it can take years to sell a wedding dress. You may get lucky and have a bride purchase your wedding dress right away. But it also may take a while to find a bride that fits your wedding dress style and size. Remember that your wedding dress is a manufacturer’s size, but it has also been tailored to the exact proportions that you were at the time of your wedding.

It’s going to be a bit of a puzzle trying to find someone else that shares your vision of your dream wedding dress and also fits into your same body measurements.

Remember when you're going through the process of selling your bridal dress, just be patient. It may take time before your online listing converts to a purchase.

Pro Tip:  Because it can take a long time to sell your wedding dress, we recommend getting your wedding dress listed for sale as soon as possible.

Cleaning & Preservation

The first thing you want to do after your wedding day is to send your dress out to a dry cleaner as soon as possible. Be sure to check out our past video on the importance of gown cleaning and preservation to learn why it’s important to do this step as quickly as you can after the wedding day.

Your next step in trying to sell your wedding dress is going to be deciding if you want to preserve your wedding dress or not. Paying for the extra preservation of your wedding dress will be an extra cost, however, there could be value in it to make sure that you keep the gown in the best condition as possible. It will be important for you to decide what makes the most sense for you.

Wedding Dress Storage

You will want to make sure that when you put your online listing up, you are also storing your dress in a really great way to maintain its condition throughout the time you are waiting for the dress to sell.

You will want your wedding dress to be in the best condition possible in order to resell. Be sure that the gown is kept in a cool, dark place so that you don't tarnish any beading or have any yellowing of the fabric.

Pro Tip:  Heat can really impact the condition of the wedding dress, so keep this in mind as you are listing your wedding dress for sale online.

Online Listings

After we've discussed proper cleaning and storage of your wedding dress after your wedding for those that are hoping to resell their dress, now we’ve come to the online listing. Where do you sell a wedding dress online?

Our Wedding Fashion Expert at Lovella recommends a couple of different websites to sell your wedding dress, veil, and bridal accessories:

It doesn’t hurt to list your wedding dress for sale on all of the recommended sites, not just one site. You'll want your wedding dress to be seen by as many potential buyers as possible to hopefully make a quick sale.

Sizing Notes

Keep in mind that when you list the size of the wedding dress, that's just the dress size that you ordered from the dress manufacturer, but it has been altered to your specific measurements. Remember that you went through the alterations process in the months and weeks leading up to your wedding day. Be sure to make a note of these alterations in your online listing.

Pro Tip:  If you know that you plan to sell your wedding dress after your wedding day, we highly recommend having the bridal store take the measurements of your bust, waist, and hips at your last fitting appointment before your wedding so that you have the exact measurements that the wedding dress was altered to.

You can list the manufacturer’s size and also say the wedding dress has been altered to these measurements, making your online listing much more precise. We also highly recommend putting your height in the online listing, including your heels, so that the buyer also knows what height the wedding dress was hemmed to.

It will make the dress reselling process much easier to have all these details at the time you are ready to list your wedding dress for sale, rather than having to come back to it months or even years later.

We mentioned this before, but it is worth repeating. The sooner you can list your wedding dress for sale after your wedding day, and the more prepared you are, the easier it will be.

You don’t want to have to call your bridal dress store years later after your wedding asking if they still have a record of your measurements or how tall your heels were. Make a list of all you need to know pre-wedding day, and when it comes time to sell, you will be prepared and able to answer any questions potential buyers may have.

We hope that you learned a few things and tips for how to resell your wedding dress. We with you the best of luck in not only finding your dream wedding dress, but also in helping another bride find her dream wedding dress too.
